George Rumney

SENIOR SYSTEMS ENGINEER, INFORMATION SYSTEM SECURITY OFFICER

George Rumney is the Information System Security Officer (ISSO) for the NCCS. In this role, George stays current on all IT and Security related issues concerning the NCCS, the Science Directorate, Goddard Space Flight Center and the Agency. And, as a member of the Leadership Team, George provides technical leadership in multiple areas across the NCCS, especially those relating to infrastructure, architecture, information services, and networking.

Mr. Rumney joined NASA in 1978.  He served as the lead software system engineer for the Massively Parallel Processor (MPP), from the project’s inception, through its research and development stages, until MPP's retirement in 1991. The project arc developed prototypes that were "8 by 8," "16 by 16," and finally Goodyear delivered "128 by 128" (16,384 processors).  MPP is now showcased at the Smithsonian because of its revolutionary ability to process thousands of pieces of data at a time, demonstrating that parallel architecture in computing was feasible.  Although it did not alter the architecture of personal computers, it did make way for the creation of high performance computing/supercomputers.
