AWS DeepRacer showcased the latest in Reinforcement Technology at NASA and allowed users to train and race 1/18th-scale autonomous cars! The small-scale racecars were controlled by models created using the AWS DeepRacer 3D racing simulator. The integrated simulator provided a development environment for users to experiment and refine their models—and ultimately deploy them to a physical racetrack. By combining input from the car’s camera with a simulator-trained throttle and steering model, racers were able to experiment with reinforcement learning algorithms.

As one of the NCCS staff members commented, “I didn’t have any experience with machine learning or reinforcement algorithms prior to the event, but being able to test relevant parameters from a webpage made it incredibly easy to get up and running. Watching the car use my rules to navigate the track was very exciting!”
