// NCCS Data Management Plans
The NCCS requires Data Management Plans (DMPs) for any data requests that either put data on the Centralized Storage System (CSS) or are over 100 TB on Discover or Explore. The purpose of these plans is to allow the NCCS to manage storage purchases, data migrations, and data deletions. Team members from the NCCS can meet with you to answer any questions you might have about the template, which usually can be worked through in less than an hour.
DMP Philosophy
The NCCS believes that the keeping data online is critical to supporting science priorities, particularly as the need for AI/ML workflows evolves. To do so requires shifting resources away from tape storage and engaging in the upfront consideration of the long term disposition of data. The NCCS approach to DMPs involves understanding the size, location, and disposition of input, intermediate, and final data products. Ultimately, the NCCS wishes to support interdisciplinary science by providing systems and processes that allow your final data products to become another scientist’s input data. Additional information can be found in the slides from the Tech Talk, Data Management Plans for the NCCS.
DMP Process
Please follow the process below when requesting new storage on CSS or storage areas larger than 100 TB on either Discover or Explore/ADAPT:
- Download a copy of the latest Data Management Plan template.
- Fill out what you can and send an email to support@nccs.nasa.gov if you have questions.
Note: the GMAO is planning an online calculator for GEOS, hopefully available in the fall of 2022. - For requests to make data public, please also download and sign the NCCS Public Data Assertion form.
- Submit the DMP and/or Public Data Assertion form to the NCCS by emailing them to support@nccs.nasa.gov.
- The NCCS will request approval from your organization. Approver(s) are listed below for major customers:
- GMAO—Associate Chief—Bill Putman
- Once approved, the NCCS will submit a support request, with a cc to the requestor, to the technical staff for implementation.
- The NCCS will configure the storage and close out the ticket.
If you are trying to make a static dateset that is less than 100 TBs publicly available, you may submit a DMP-lite.
Coordination with HEC Allocations and ROSES Proposal Requests
We are aware that scientists submit storage requests with their HEC Allocations and proposal requests, however, approval for storage is not governed by those organizations. You can improve this process by ensuring that your organization is aware of your storage request before you apply for allocations or grants.
